Signs & Symptoms of Child Abuse and Neglect

Indicators of child abuse and neglect are not always easy to recognise; the key is to be aware of both physical signs (eg bruising) and behavioural symptoms (eg a child constantly flinching around certain adults).

Not every sign and symptoms will mean a child has been hurt or risk; consider: what you see, what you hear, what the child told you, and what someone else told you (eg your daughter tells you about what her friend is going through at home).

Refer to this excellent link providing information about signs you will see in children, signs you will see in parents, signs you will see in your yourself. Australian Childhood Foundation

Testimonial

“Maree is one of those rare people who have an enormous heart and passion for children, a powerful intellect that enables her to turn her skills to a huge range of activities, an instinct for relating with people of all ages and backgrounds and a value base that makes her a pleasure to work with. It is always a delight to come across someone in whom you can have absolute trust, to know that whatever project or programme they are working on will be undertaken with wonderful attention to detail and full, honest feedback. Maree is that person.

Over eight years or so she has been involved with Child Matters in numerous roles, but most recently as the tutor for the Diploma in Child Protection Studies. Her absolute commitment to child protection and superb teaching and coaching skills have inspired so many of the people she tutored to become true advocates for children, that her influence will have a lasting legacy.”

An ability to understand and recognise the signs and symptoms of child abuse and the confidence to then take action is imperative.
